‘Hourglass’ consists of photographs of Ylang Ylang flowers, known for their aroma, not beauty. They are slender long twisting petals in chartreuse and yellow with spots as they mature. We had a tree in the back yard growing up and would simmer the leaves to scent the house.
I painted the flowers open wide on a flat surface in a way they would never be seen, then manipulated the petals in an abstract unrecognizable style. There are many ways to see the final image. I painted the hourglass figure and added texture then lighting to enhance it.
